Cosy sims and the art of the gentle timer

July 19, 2026 · Marek Novák

There's a whole shelf of mobile simulations that call themselves cosy but sneak in timers designed to nag you back. Harborline Town got me thinking about the difference between a timer that structures your day and one that hijacks it.

A gentle timer is one you can ignore. Your town keeps existing whether you check in twice a day or once a week, and nothing important withers while you're gone. That's what makes a sim relaxing — the game bends around your life instead of the other way around.

The bad version uses urgency as a hook: crops that rot, buildings that decay, streaks that break. It works, in the sense that it keeps people opening the app, but it turns a hobby into an obligation. I've deleted more than one otherwise lovely game over exactly this.

My advice when trying a new sim: leave it alone for two days on purpose. If coming back feels like a treat, it's a keeper. If it feels like catching up on chores, uninstall it and don't feel guilty.
